August 22: God’s unique relationship with Israel

Fear of the Lord-Tests the Heart

God called Moses to meet with Him on the mountain. He also gave instructions for the people and for the priests. They were to cleanse themselves and come near to the base of the mountain so they could see and hear what God would say to Moses.

Exodus 20:18-20

Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off. Then they said to Moses, “You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.

And Moses said to the people, “Do not fear for God has come to test you, and that His fear maybe before you, so that you may not sin.”

The fear of the Lord would have humbled them. Instead fear paralyzed the people so they refused to hear what God would say. Because of fear they abdicated their responsibility and rejected the most wonderful privilege.

  1. Faithful by His strength says:

A wonderful reminder of how to pray for Israel, and the Church, who in large part, has become apostate. Thank you. Not to sound trite, but “prayer does change things” and God hears the prayers and cries of His people. It is vital we examine our hearts before the Lord, with a humble heart and with repentance, that our prayers not be hindered. Do we desire to see Israel return to her God? Do we as the Church desire to become a powerhouse for the Lord in these last days? Then, we cannot afford to live lives of prayerlessness. Lord cause a hunger for your Word and a return to prayer to become rampant amongst your people!

Father God, bring a holy fear upon your people Israel, causing them to look to you for deliverance from sin and rebellion. Remove the blindness brought in part, that the Gentiles might be saved. Do the same for the Church, who, in large part, has lost her first love. Grant us grace and mercy, I pray, and lead us in the way everlasting. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Prov.1:7). Lord turn the hearts of your people Israel to Yeshua, and the hearts of your Church to you again. Strengthen each of us that we may be able to stand in the evil day.
