Josiah was one of the most righteous kings of the Southern Kingdom (Judah). He called the people to repent and return to the Lord. He destroyed all the high places where the people sacrificed to false Gods and committed terrible acts of rebellion. But the people’s repentance wasn’t from the heart and they soon turned back to their wicked ways.
This is one of the most specific prophecies of Yeshua the Messiah in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament).
Through the prophet Isaiah, God made a promise to Israel that the Messiah would come from the family of David, son of Jesse. One of the key descriptions of the Messiah would be the fear of the Lord.
The Fear of the Lord was fundamental to God’s unique relationship with Israel. The people were expected to respond to Him with awe and reverence and yet the #1 commandment was to love Him.
Jonah was given an assignment from the Lord, an assignment he didn’t want to accept. In rebellion he ran away, jumped onto a ship and went in the opposite direction.
God answered this prayer in the Incarnation His only begotten Son.
While everyone can find personal comfort from the Psalms, care must be taken not to distort their national significance to Israel.
The Psalmist praises God for “deliverance from all fears” and salvation from all troubles.”
The Day of the Lord will be a terrible time not only for Israel, but also for the entire world. God promises to only “save” Israel.
