God had already shown Moses His power, so Moses could certainly believe that God would help him lead Israel out of Egypt.  But Moses wanted more.   Moses wanted God to go with him.  Moses said, “If your presence does not go, do not bring us up from here.”  Then Moses asked for even more, “Please show me Your glory!” (Exodus 33:13-19.)

God said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you and I will proclaim the name of the LORD…” God did not show Moses His glory but His goodness.  God considers His goodness more life impacting than His glory.  When we are in trouble, knowing God’s goodness will help us to trust Him.

Exodus 34:5-6

Now the Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth.”

First God reminded Moses of His name repeating it twice for emphasis, YHWH, YHWH EL. Then the God of the universe described Himself.  When in doubt of God’s goodness, remember these words:

• רַחוּם [rachum]: A deeply rooted love, a parent to a child. From the same root as “womb.”
• חַנּוּן [chanun]: Favor, the same word we saw in the Purim story.
• אַפַּיִם אֶרֶךְ [archa apim]: Literally, a long nose – it takes God a long time before His “nose” gets red in anger.
• וֶאֱמֶֽת וְרַב־חֶסֶד [v’rav hesed v’emet]: Abounding, overflowing with covenant keeping love and truth.

Yeshua said, “If you’ve seen Me, you’ve seen the Father, the Father and I are one.” God the Father and God the Son are one in essence and one in character: merciful, gracious, abounding in grace and truth.
