June 1: God’s unique relationship with Israel

-Jerusalem, God’s holy city

In a few days (June 5), Israel will celebrate another national holiday.

Jerusalem Day (יום ירושלים‎, Yom Yerushalayim) celebrates Israel’s victory in the “Six Day War.” As a result, Israel gained control over the Old City and unified Jerusalem.

Although many nations and international groups try to force Israel to divide the city, Jerusalem belongs to God. He chose it to be the place where all people would come to worship Him!

2 Chronicles 6:3-6

Then the king turned around and blessed the whole assembly of Israel, while all the assembly of Israel was standing. And he said: “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who has fulfilled with His hands what He spoke with His mouth to my father David, saying, ‘Since the day that I brought My people out of the land of Egypt, I have chosen no city from any tribe of Israel in which to build a house, that My name might be there, nor did I choose any man to be a ruler over My people Israel. Yet I have chosen Jerusalem, that My name may be there, and I have chosen David to be over My people Israel.’

Psalm 122:3-4

Jerusalem is built

As a city that is compact together,

Where the tribes go up,

The tribes of the Lord,

To the Testimony of Israel,

To give thanks to the name of the Lord.

In June 1967, David Rubinger, a press photographer in Israel, followed IDF forces that were fighting to liberate the Old City of Jerusalem. At the Western Wall, three IDF soldiers posed for a photograph. They were Zion Karasanti, Yitzhak Yifat and Haim Oshri. While their names are not famous, their faces have become a symbol of the reunification of Jerusalem.
