June 12 – God’s Unique Relationship with Israel

Clemens continues:

“If the statistics are right, the Jews constitute but one percent of the human race. It suggests a nebulous dim puff of star dust lost in the blaze of the Milky Way. Properly the Jew ought hardly to be heard of, but he is heard of, has always been heard of. He is as prominent on the planet as any other people, and his commercial importance is extravagantly out of proportion to the smallness of his bulk. His contributions to the world’s list of great names in literature, science, art, music, finance, medicine, and abstruse learning are also away out of proportion to the weakness of his numbers. He has made a marvelous fight in the world, in all the ages; and has done it with his hands tied behind him. He could be vain of himself, and be excused for it. The Egyptian, the Babylonian, and the Persian rose, filled the planet with sound and splendor, then faded to dream-stuff and passed away; the Greek and the Roman followed, and made a vast noise, and they are gone; other peoples have sprung up and held their torch high for a time, but it burned out, and they sit in twilight now, or have vanished. The Jew saw them all, beat them all, and is now what he always was, exhibiting no decadence, no infirmities of age, no weakening of his parts, no slowing of his energies, no dulling of his alert and aggressive mind. All things are mortal but the Jew; all other forces pass, but he remains. What is the secret of his immortality?” (http://israelinsider.net/forum/topics/samuel-clemens-mark-twain)

The answer of course, is God’s faithfulness to His promises!

This Psalm reflects the covenant God made with King David, descendant of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  It speaks to not only David, but to his ultimate descendant – the Messiah of Israel and the world.

Psalm 89: 1-4, 19, 24-34:  I will sing of the mercies of the forever;
 with my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations.

 For I have said, “Mercy shall be built up forever;
 Your faithfulness You shall establish in the very heavens.”

You spoke in a vision to Your holy one, “I have made a covenant with My chosen,
I have sworn to My servant David: ‘Your seed I will establish forever,
and build up your throne to all generations. My faithfulness and My mercy shall be with him,
and in My name his horn shall be exalted.’

“Also I will set his hand over the sea,
and his right hand over the rivers.  He shall cry to Me, ‘You are my Father,
my God, and the rock of my salvation.’

 “Also I will make him My firstborn,
the highest of the kings of the earth.  My mercy I will keep for him forever,
and My covenant shall stand firm with him.  His seed also I will make to endure forever,
and his throne as the days of heaven.

“If his sons forsake My law
and do not walk in My judgments, if they break My statutes and do not keep My commandments, then I will punish their transgression with the rod,
and their iniquity with stripes.

“Nevertheless My lovingkindness I will not utterly take from him,
nor allow My faithfulness to fail.  My covenant I will not break,
nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips.”

The old and the new…
