You can almost hear a voice coming from Paul’s audience complaining that perhaps Israel didn’t hear with understanding. But Paul reminds Israel of God’s warning:
But I say, did Israel not know? First Moses says:
“I will provoke you to jealousy by those who are not a nation,
I will move you to anger by a foolish nation.”
God’s offer of salvation to the Gentiles had three motivations:
- His love for all people,
- His desire to fill the earth with the knowledge of His glory,
- His desire to provoke the Jews to jealousy.
God knew that the Jewish people would be jealous that He would allow Gentiles to know, to love, to trust and to worship Him by faith!
Not understanding God’s plans and purposes, there is still an animosity, an underlying resentment or even anger that the promises of God’s blessings have been extended to the Gentiles.
Worse, some Gentiles believe that the Church has replaced Israel. But Paul corrects this theology throughout these chapters.
PRAY THE CHURCH WILL PROVOKE ISRAEL TO JEALOUSY THROUGH HER INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP WITH ISRAEL’S GOD.
