Pray for the peace of Jerusalem

May they prosper who love you

 John 10:22-24

Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon’s porch. Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long do You keep us in doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

The Maccabees ruled Israel for 100 years.  In the end they became as corrupt as previous rulers.  Soon God removed His hand of blessing from His beloved city.  Enemies arose and began to threaten Israel.  The king turned to Rome, an emerging power.  Eventually the guest turned against the host and Rome absorbed Israel.

Israel, no longer an independent and free nation, desperately sought her Messiah.  Moses had been a deliverer but was not the Messiah.  Neither was Judah Maccabee.  Thus it was with excitement and fear that the Jews questioned the Rabbi from Nazareth. Although He did many things that the Messiah was to do, He didn’t meet their expectations of a political leader and deliverer from oppression.
