In ancient days when people, or nations made covenants (contracts) they “cut” the covenant by sacrificing an animal. The blood of the sacrifice was a warning what would happen to either side if they broke the covenant.
God’s covenant with Abraham was given to Isaac and Jacob and their descendants. That covenant is the foundation of Israel and what makes her unique among all the nations and peoples of the world.
Because God is faithful to His covenant with Abraham, He continually pleads with Israel to repent and to return to Him in love, faith and trust.
The sign of the circumcision was to be the outward sign of response to the unique relationship God offered Israel. It was to be an outward symbol of what was going on in the heart.
