God called Israel His “son, His firstborn son.” His covenant with Israel wasn’t based on anything Israel did, keeping the covenant was totally God’s responsibility. However, God did give Israel privileges and responsibilities that He gave to no other nations. So when Israel turned away, God’s heart was broken. Nevertheless, He never broke His covenant promises
