ארץ ישראל הייתה חשובה לא רק מבחינה רוחנית אלא גם מבחינה מעשית. החברה הישראלית הייתה חברה חקלאית, החיים בארץ נסבו סביב עונות הזריעה, הקציר והאסיף. היו לעם שלושה חגים של העונות הללו, באביב, בקיץ ובסתו. לכן היו שלושה חגים של ביכורים. אך התנך מזכיר רק את שבועות כחג הביכורים
